Goal Setting

Goal Setting-It sounds simple enough…

The majority of people who make NY resolutions fail to succeed. Any idea why that’s the case? My guess is because they’ve missed one of these simple steps. I call them simple because to read, they truly are.

But make no mistake, none should be taken lightly (or skipped!!)

Set Clear Intentions

What is it you REALLY want in 2015? A new job? To lose 15 pounds? To cut your debt in half? Think big. Consider something that would be so amazing to say you accomplished in 2015. Not just a so-so goal, but something scary and super exciting-give yourself permission to dream big!

Now think about why it’s so exciting. What will you FEEL like when you get there? How will it affect the big picture of your life? You have to connect with passion to your ‘action’. You have to find your WHY. That why needs to be so deep that nothing will stop you from making it happen.

Write It Down

Studies show you’re more successful when you write down your goals as well as the steps you need to take to reach them. There’s something about making a permanent record of it. Look at it every day. Yes, EVERY day. Think back to what it will feel like when you complete it. Experience it as if it were reality and eventually it will be. Shut yourself in your closet, sit in your car before heading in to work or home, lay in bed right before sleep or right as you wake up; just take a few minutes to visualize your success. It will keep you moving forward.

Make Time

If you don’t think you have enough time to accomplish your goal…you don’t. You have to find the time. No, you have to make the time. What can be pushed back or given up in place of pursuing something you are passionate about? If you can’t find anything, then your WHY isn’t big enough, your passion isn’t great enough and you will fall short. Go back to the drawing board.

Accountability

It’s easy to flake on yourself. Make some sort of public announcement, even if it’s just to one individual. Just make sure they are someone that won’t let you off the hook. They need to be willing to feed you the hard truth when you’re copping out of your commitment. You may need to find more than one helper-one person for tough love and another for support and encouragement. Or maybe you prefer an entire army. That’s what I'm here for! One is the loneliest number, and maybe the least successful!

Have Faith

If things don’t seem to be falling in to place, if it feels like the world is conspiring against you, maybe it is. What I mean by that is, maybe it’s just not the right time for that particular goal. Go back to the
beginning and see if you missed a step. Perhaps there is something that needs to be accomplished
BEFORE this goal is doable. Don’t give up completely; sometimes a few small tweaks can set you on a whole new path. A successful one!

I'd love to hear your BIG goals for this year!
